My love for living on the coast probably began when I was born in Florida. Years later, my family moved to the beautiful Addison county of Vermont where I lived until going off to college. While attending Johnson State College, I was lucky enough to have Dr. Carol Story as the professor for my Children's Literature class. Dr. Story asked each of us to write a children's book and submit it to a publisher, as the final project. That, in my opinion, was where my love of writing children's books began. I have always been a huge fan of all children's books, but I gained a deeper appreciation once I began putting my own stories and illustrations on paper.
After graduating from college with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education, I went on to earn a masters degree in the education of gifted and talented students. I left Vermont to teach in the greater Boston area and, after a year, moved to Maine where I have stayed ever since. I taught at the Camden-Rockport Elementary School, since first coming to Maine in 1997, and now teach third grade at the Great Salt Bay Community School. My husband and I built our own house, where we still live with our twins, two cute rescue-dogs, and a huge cat.
I co-own, with my husband, an oyster farm called Norumbega Oyster, Inc. Our oyster farm is located in a harbor near our home and serves as the setting for my new non-fiction children’s book, Farming on the Sea. My teen twins Sam and Kate are featured in the story.
When I'm not busy teaching, helping with the oyster farm, playing with my kids, taking photographs of nature, or gardening, I enjoy writing and drawing. I have written many fiction and nonfiction children's books and will continue to explore my love of illustrating and writing.
